« Jean COCTEAU, A Life », by Claude ARNAUD, winner of the 30th Annual French-American Foundation Translation Prize
0 One of the five finalists for the 30th Annual French-Americain Fondation Translation Prize, Jean Cocteau, a Life, by Claude Arnaud, translated by Lauren Elkin 
and Charlotte Mandell, is one the two winners. The awards ceremony has been held on 8 June 2017. The winning translators has received $10,000.

L’un des cinq livres finalistes, Jean Cocteau: A Life, par Claude Arnaud, traduit du français à l’anglais par Lauren Elkin et Charlotte Mandell, est l’un des deux livres vainqueurs (dans la catégorie non-fiction) du 30° prix Annuel de traduction de la French-American Foundation. La cérémonie de remise du prix a eu lieu le 8 Juin 2017. Les traductrices lauréates ont reçu 10,000 dollars.

La Cinémathèque rend hommage à Charles NAJMAN

Le Mercredi 8 mars 2017, à 20 h., en salle Georges Franju, la Cinémathèque française a rendu hommage à Charles NAJMAN, décédé à 60 ans cet été, en projetant son dernier long-métrage, PITCHIPOÏ. Tourné en 2012, interprété par Xavier Gallais, Laurent Lacotte, Sabrina Seyvecou, Denis Lavant, Serge Merlin, Michèle Moretti, ce film raconte la dérive hallucinée d’un stand-up comique, Julien Schulmann, dont le père meurt brutalement. Rescapé des camps d’extermination, celui-ci demande par testament à son autre fils, Pierre, de disperser ses cendres en Pologne, sa terre d’origine. Mais Pierre a disparu depuis deux ans en Amérique latine et la famille Schulmann n’a que haine pour la Pologne. A l’exception de Pierre, dont le fantôme semble s’ingénier à encourager à un retour à cette terre d’origine, qu’il tient pour la vrai patrie des Juifs.
Un film délibérément sarcastique, coupant court à toutes les revendication identitaires d’aujourd’hui, que la plupart des distributeurs avaient refusés de sortir en salle, par peur, et qui a enfin la chance, après une première sortie discrète à l’espace SAINT-MICHEL en 2014, de trouver son vrai public.

75018 Paris (métro La Chapelle) au profit de la Fondation « PARADIS des INDIENS » fondation à but non-lucratif qui oeuvre à scolariser les enfants et à soigner les habitants des ABRICOTS, village du finistère haïtien ravagé par le passage de l’ouragan Matthew, le 4 octobre 2016.
Les pièces musicales ont été interprétées et chantées par Stéphanie HUMEAU, pianiste, Caroline MONTIER, soprano, l’OISELEUR, baryton. Extraits de « PORTRAITS CRACHES« , une anthologie à paraître chez BOUQUINS en septembre 2017, les textes ont été dits par Claude ARNAUD. « All biography is both an act of homage and a labour of dissection,and all biographers are jealous
of their subjects, Duncan FALLOWELL writes in The Spectator (01/7/2017). Most keep it cool, but some like it hot and have created a distinct category in which jealousy becomes murder followed by necromancy: the one they hug is asphyxiated — but lo! — they breathe their own air back into it. Sartre’s book on Jean Genet is such a work, as are Brigid Brophy’s on Ronald Firbank and Roger Lewis’s on Anthony Burgess. Claude Arnaud’s on Jean Cocteau is yet another. Its approach is intensely romantic. Everyone is heaving in lurid colours. Arnaud certainly knows his material; and that he carefully references printed sources along the way is adroit, a necessity to the illusion, like the pins which hold a provisional costume together. The result is a mind-boggling excursion through Cocteau’s many milieux: from his teenage beginnings as a poet in Proustian Paris; through the Great War and the Modern movement of the 1920s in collaboration with Diaghilev, Satie, Stravinsky and Picasso; followed by the macabre uncertainties of the 1930s and later in Nazi-occupied Paris; and on to postwar film making and international celebrity. The parade of boyfriends and benefactresses is spectacular, and the near-lifelong opium addiction is paralleled by the manner in which the story moves forward in a kind of peristaltic reverie. 0The cover of the 449th issue of LITERARY REVIEW (December 2016, UK) is dedicated to « JEAN COCTEAU A LIFE« , the english translation of « COCTEAU« , by CLAUDE ARNAUD.
« Arnaud’s biography is very long (over a thousand pages, including index), but it seldom feels padded, writes KEVIN JACKSON in his review. His
style – rendered into English with, he notes, some help from Donna TARTT – is as lyrical as it is ungrammatical, and he allows himself moments of speculative excess that will strike many readers as silly: ‘Some days he was so full of joy that he looked like a fetus daubing the wall with his placenta.’ Over the top, to be sure, and yet quite well suited to his flamboyant subject. Jean-Luc Godard once wrote an article in praise of Cocteau that repeatedly asked, ‘When did you last see Orphée?’ The triumph of Arnaud’s work is that it makes you keen not just to watch that great film again but to explore the whole of Cocteau’s delicate, fascinating universe.

LA LITERARY REVIEW (GDE-BRETAGNE) CONSACRE LA COUVERTURE DE SON NUMERO 449 (decembre 2016) A LA TRADUCTION ANGLAISE DU « COCTEAU » DE CLAUDE ARNAUD.
» La biographie d’ARNAUD est très longue (un bon millier de pages, en comprenant l’index), mais elle l’est rarement inutilement, écrit KEVIN JACKSON dans cet article. Son style – transposé en anglais avec l’aide, note-t-il, de Donna TARTT – est aussi lyrique qu’affranchi des règles de grammaire. Il s’autorise des moments d’excès spéculatifs qui frapperont le lecteur, comme ce: « Il était si joyeux certains jours qu’il ressemblait à un foetus barbouillant les murs de son placenta ». Hors mesure, sans aucun doute, mais parfaitement adapté à son flamboyant sujet. Jean-Luc GODARD écrivit un article célébrant COCTEAU où il demandait, de façon récurrente: » Quand avez-vous vu pour la dernière fois ORPHEE ? » Le prodige du livre d’ARNAUD est qu’il nous donne non seulement l’envie de revoir ce film, mais d’explorer, dans son intégralité, l’univers à la fois fascinant et délicat de COCTEAU. »
