« Les plus connus des avant-gardiste inconnus n’ont jamais manqué de biographes – à commencer par eux-mêmes! -mais la biographie épique publiée en 2003 par Claude ARNAUD, aujourd’hui disponible en anglais grâce à la traduction de Lauren Elkin et Charlotte Mandell, est la première à réussir l’impossible, en offrant un récit continu de la vie de COCTEAU, au lieu d’une sélection de hauts faits. Le résultat tient en un pavé complexe de plus de 1000 pages. Mais cette amplitude n’est pas vaine; elle est l’espace nécessaire pour donner corps à l’histoire vécue par COCTEAU. Si quelques-unes des précédents biographies, celle de Francis Steegmuller (1970) en particulier, qui faisait référence, sont plus lisibles, c’est qu’elles n’étaient pas aussi ambitieuses. L’on doit à Claude ARNAUD d’avoir fait le travail que personne avant lui n’avait eu l’énergie de faire (…) Cocteau était tout sauf ennuyeux, et je ne peux imaginer une biographie exhaustive suscitant autant d’éclats de rire. L’empathie imaginative le dispute à la rigueur de la recherche, chez ARNAUD; il fait vivre son seulement son héros mais tous les seconds rôles… »

« THE MOST FAMOUS unknown modernist has never lacked biographers — beginning with himself — but Claude ARNAUD’s 2003 epic, now available in English courtesy of Lauren Elkin and Charlotte Mandel, is the first to attempt the impossible: a continuous narrative of Jean COCTEAU’s life, instead of selected highlights. The result is an unwieldy 1,000+ page doorstop. But the vastness is not vacuous; it’s the space necessary to unreel COCTEAU’s story in full. If some of the previous biographies, like Francis Steegmuller’s 1970 classic, are more readable, it’s because they weren’t as ambitious. Readers owe Arnaud thanks for dispatching a job that none before him had the stamina to face (…) Whatever he was, Cocteau was never boring, and I can’t think of another full-dress biography with a higher laugh-out-loud count. « This is an exhaustive and exhausting book—including all the people COCTEAU rubbed shoulders with, famous and semi-famous names jostling on the page to re-create a world that was brought to an end by the dawning of our world in the aftermath of World War II. But at least it’s an evocation of a vanished era as if it still mattered—and that’s good. You want intensity from the person telling you the story you’re listening to; ARNAUD is nothing if not intense. After all, if it’s narrated with ironic distance, absolutely nobody will care. And there is no distance here: it’s like the poet falling into the water mirror. All of a sudden, there you are, side by side with PROUST, GIDE, Anna de NOAILLES, NIJINSKY, STRAVINSKY, PICASSO, and dozens of lesser lights (…) The artistic world of “l’entre-les-deux-guerres” Paris is lovingly chronicled… and rendered by his translators in supple English that doesn’t read like a translation (…) The charm of ARNAUD’s book is that he seems to re-create the adolescent intensity of Cocteau’s world, the one where the latest show at the Ballets Russes was all anybody talked about, and where Being Part of It All was the only thing that mattered. « Voici un livre à la fois exhaustif et épuisant, qui comprend tous les gens que COCTEAU côtoya, vedettes et semi-vedettes se bousculant pour recréer un monde disparu à la fin de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Mais au moins ce monde est-il évoqué comme s’il comptait toujours autant – et c’est une bonne chose. Vous attendez de l’intensité, de la part des gens qui vous racontent un histoire, et Claude ARNAUD est tout sauf mou. Tout le monde se désintéresse d’une histoire racontée avec ironie et distance – et il n’y a aucune distance ici. Vous tombez dans le miroir d’eau de Cocteau et vous retrouvez côte à côte avec PROUST, GIDE, Anna de NOAILLES, NIJINSKY, STRAVINSKY, PICASSO (…) Le monde artistique de “l’entre-les-deux-guerres” parisien est chroniqué avec grâce et rendu avec souplesse par les traductrices, si bien que le tout n’a pas l’air issu d’une traduction (…) Le charme du livre d’ARNAUD tient à sa recréation de l’intensité adolescente du monde de COCTEAU, celui ou tout le monde parlait du dernier spectacle des BALLETS RUSSES et où être dans le coup, artistiquement, était vraiment la seule chose qui comptait. Lire cette biographie c’est plonger dans l’Atlandide. Prenez un week-end et plongez tête la première. En en revenant à aujourd’hui, vous vous demanderez dans quel monde vous naviguiez, et dans lequel vous vous réveillez.
