Avec ses mensonges et ses impasses, la sale guerre engagée par Vladimir POUTINE en Ukraine est un cas d’école éclairant les ressorts du national-populisme. Après avoir flatté son peuple en lui rappelant sa grandeur et l’étendue passée de son empire, un autocrate veut atteindre des sommets de popularité en engageant une nouvelle guerre afin d' »offrir » à ce même peuple une nouvelle victoire. Ce narcissisme en miroir – « Tu m’aimes parce que je suis fort, je t’aime parce que tu es grand« , – fonctionne généralement bien, jusqu’aux premières défaites annonciatrices de l’effondrement. Qu’importe que Grozny ait été rasée durant la seconde guerre de Tchétchénie, la Géorgie amputée, Alep martyrisée lors de la guerre civile syrienne,  le nouveau tsar arrache avec les dents des territoires perdus de l’ex-Empire tsariste ou soviétique pour les déposer aux pieds de son peuple. Ce contrat obscène est assuré d’un succès certain, en Histoire : sans comparer l’incomparable, c’est Napoléon « offrant » au peuple français un tiers de l’Europe,  plus que Louis XIV et Charlemagne réunis, en mettant sur le trône ses frères et soeurs; c’est Mussolini « rendant » aux Italiens la Libye et la Tunisie que contrôlait l’Empire romain, avant une partie de la Somalie, l’Ethiopie et l’Erythrée; c’est Hitler restituant aux Allemands la grandeur que le traité de Versailles leur a confisqué, en leur offrant l’Autriche, la Pologne, les pays Baltes, avant la Hollande, la Belgique, la France and so on – la liste serait trop longue pour ce post; c’est Staline « rendant » à l’URSS la Pologne et les pays Baltes après avoir tenté d’annexer la Finlande et avant de manger la Moldavie et de phagocyter l’Albanie, la Yougoslavie, la Roumanie, la Bulgarie, la Tchécoslovaquie…

Ces prédations s’avèrent efficaces, dans un premier temps: Napoléon, Mussolini, Staline et Hitler ont été adulés par une partie de leur peuple, le plus violent, Hitler, ayant même été le plus aimé. Nul doute que si Marine LE PEN était élue le 24 avril, elle gagnerait à mettre en place un même narcissisme à deux – « Tu m’aimes parce que je dis tout haut ce que tu penses, je t’aime parce que ta grandeur restaurée va assurer ma postérité ». On se demande donc ce que fera celle qui se présente désormais comme une gentille mamie confitures tout occupée à gâter ses chats, quand le jour viendra d’affronter de vrais fauves, Poutine en particulier. On peut penser qu’elle ne s’opposera pas sérieusement à lui, au vu des liens étroits qu’ils ont tissés. Elle pourrait même être tentée de jouer cette carte de la grandeur retrouvé, par association :  on commence par crier « On est chez nous », on finit par s’installer chez les autres…

Et toujours l’autocrate populiste se targue d’être fils ou fille du peuple: Staline, Hitler, Poutine, Le Pen, c’est toujours la même rengaine, je suis des vôtres, je vous défends contre les forces de l’étranger et de l’argent, je suis le peuple. Le peuple n’existe qu’aux moments brûlants de l’Histoire – révoltes, refus d’occupation, célébration de victoires : il est le reste du temps le levier des dictateurs, des terroristes et des nationaux-populistes. Dans les pays libres, il est une addition de citoyens souverains qui, espérons-le, ne se tromperons pas dimanche prochain.

With its lies and dead ends, Vladimir Putin’s dirty war in Ukraine is a textbook case of national populism. After flattering his people by reminding them of his greatness and the past extent of his empire, an autocrat wants to reach new heights of popularity by starting a new war to “offer” the same people a New Victory. This mirror narcissism – ‘You love me because I am strong, I love you because you are great’ – usually works well until the first defeats herald the collapse.Grozny was burned to the ground, and Aleppo was martyred consecutively during the second Chechen war and the Syrian civil war, and Georgia was amputated; the new tsar is bringing back lost territories from the former tsarist or Soviet empire to lay them at his people’s feet.

This obscene contract is sure to be a success in history: without comparing the incomparable, it is Napoleon “offering” to the French people a third of Europe, more than Louis XIV and Charlemagne combined, by putting his brothers and sisters on the throne; it is Mussolini “giving back” to the Italians Libya and Tunisia that the Roman Empire controlled, before parts of Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea; it was Hitler restoring to the Germans the greatness that the Treaty of Versailles had confiscated from them, by giving them Austria, Poland, the Baltic States, before Holland, Belgium, France and so on – the list would be too long for this article; it was Stalin who “gave back” Poland and the Baltic States to the USSR after having tried to annex Finland and before eating Moldavia and swallowing Albania, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia…

These predations proved effective at first: part of their people adored Napoleon, Mussolini, Stalin, and Hitler, the most violent, was even the most loved. There is no doubt that if Marine Le Pen wins the presidential election on 24 April, she would like to implement the same ‘two part’ narcissism. “You love me because I say out loud what you dare not admit. I love you because your restored greatness will ensure my posterity”. So one wonders what the woman who now presents herself as a sweet grandma with jams, busy spoiling her cats, will do when the day comes to face real beasts, Putin in particular. One can imagine that she will not seriously oppose him, given the close ties they have forged. She could also lead to play the greatness card again, by association: you start by shouting “This is your home” in other people’s homes.


And always the populist autocrat boasts of being the son or daughter of the people: Stalin, Hitler, Putin, Le Pen, it’s always the same tagline, I am one of you, I defend you against the forces of money, I am the people. The people only exist at the most burning moments of history – revolts, refusal of occupation, the celebration of victories: for the rest, they are the lever of dictators, terrorists, and national populists. In free countries, it is a sum of sovereign citizens who, let us hope, will not be mistaken next Sunday (translation : Klara BUDA)
